On the Road is a program that allows participants to embark on a journey across the roads of Africa, discovering historical caravan routes, such as the one from Zagora to Timbuktu in 52 days from years ago. The program paths reminds us of the commercial and cultural routes, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas. This trip goes beyond being merely folkloric and touristic; it is deeply rooted in history, facilitating the exchange of paths that allowed for the transfer of knowledge, transition of people, and the exchange of commerce. For participants, it is an opportunity to rediscover these paths in the desert and the marginal roads that were essential routes.
This experience expands the participants’ knowledge firsthand, offering examples such as discovering the existence of Tifinagh language characters in Gambia, exploring the library in Timbuktu, and understanding immaterial knowledge along the road of a thousand castles from Ouarzazate and Zagora to Timbuktu.
During these travels, we encourage the contribution of the traveler to what we consider oral history, through archiving and the recording tools we provide, unveiling the stories of tribes as new discoveries. The safety and security of our participants are our top priorities. SOHARA offers the chance to publish and document the work, allowing us to uncover the history of tribes and share it with the new generation. Participants, upon returning to their home countries, can share their experiences with their communities, meaning that those who travel will acquire a new life. Travelers tell stories.
